About Ebook Newsroom
What is EbookNewsroom dot com?
EbookNewsroom dot com is a blog or weblog aimed at those interested in all things about ebooks. Yes, this includes Ebook Marketing, the ebook business, Free ebooks and e book management. We will discuss ebook free downloads as well as .pdf styles.
As a newspaper writer/editor/publisher for many years, I am tuned in to specifics. How exactly do you create an ebook. What exactly is the process. What are the details. And If I don’t know the answer, there will be a community of us to help find the answer. Sound good?
We will discuss how good are some of the so called free ebooks? We’ll call crap, crap. There are some magnificent copy editors-copy writers in internet marketing and there are some very dismal, dreadful examples out there also. We’ll try to make ‘em both famous. Of course we will explain how to get ebooks free also. But we’ll also try to warn you if there is a catch involved. Frequently there is. But, just as frequently, the free ebook associated with the catch, imparts some great specific knowledge. I’ve found some real gems among the weeds. There may not be another subject on the internet or in internet marketing that has so much attention given to it.
This will also be a writer’s resource center. Most writers are mainly interested in, you guessed it, writing. They are not particularly interested in the ‘techie’ stuff, but it is neccessary if you want to create and sell your ebook. If a writer absolutely does not want to get into the techie stuff, but still wants to sell their ebook, we’ll try to arrange that also.
As a writer, you may want to start off with a free ebook or ebooks, but sooner or later, most writers realize they can make money with all that knowledge rolling around in their heads. Most are very smart people, but ebook publishing seems overwhelming. Let’s take some of the mystery out of this business and learn some marketing for writers. BTW, Travel writers could really do quite well selling their specialized information (and some really do well).
Generally, ebooks, free ebooks, and the ebook business is where lots of internet marketers get their start. Some hit it big and some don’t. On the internet, you can hit it mediocre and still come out way ahead. Those with some sort of formal writing education or talent might have a leg up on the competition. Those that have no formal training can learn quickly also with the right information. I’ve even seen some pretty spectacular successes from folks who barely have command of English. (Sometimes I think me included, especially if you ever heard me talk)
“EbookNewsroom is designed to be thought provoking, humorous, educational and entertaining.”
Most of the articles or musings or writings will be those of the editor, but some will be guest written if the articles stay true to the EbookNewsroom philosophy of providing real, useful information.
Who is David Werst?
David Werst is the editor/publisher of EbookNewsroom.com He is a 4th generation newspaper publisher who was able to sell his weekly newspaper before he dropped dead at the keyboard.
David said, “I had always intended to retire near Austin, but found it infested by foreigners and other people wanting to change Texas to something else. “In the Ebook Age, we can live anywhere and market to the world.” A good starting point in your ebook business/internet marketing experience is to learn to market your ebooks.
My heart was always in West Texas which I consider the heartland of the real part of Texas.
My great-grandfather was a pioneer Texas publisher. His grandfather was a newspaper owner as was my father. I am a past president of the West Texas Press Association and grew up in the back shop of a hot metal newspaper where my dad made galleys of type on the linotype and an old widow woman mailed out the papers using a mustang mailer to stamp the addresses on the newspapers. The papers back then were usually printed in-house on a Babcock press.
I now live in Sherwood on the banks of Spring Creek about a half mile from where my great-grandfather first published his newspaper in 1900. I still have an original copy of that newspaper in my files and yes, it’s amazing what they did back then.
EbookNewsroom dot com is published from my home office/manspace in Sherwood. You won’t find Sherwood in any list of incorporated cities, but it’s in the San Angelo, Texas area. I call it The Republic of Sherwood. I draw on my experience and passion for writing and believe writers and publishers are still the finest examples of human beings on the planet.
Five questions answered by David Werst
Question 1: I heard Ebooks are out of style these days?
– Not so. The names have changed, but the suspects remain the same. Names in favor these days include information products, digital info products, pdf ebook, and other names. They are the same Ebooks whether you call them an ebook, e book, ebooks, e books, pdf ebooks, or downloadable ebook. My friend and mentor Ed Dale cannot stand the word Ebook. He wants you to call it anything but that. You come up with a better name and that’s what we will refer to. Until then, I’m all in for ebook. By the way, there is a resurgance in digital books these days. After it all went downhill 7-9 years ago, ebooks have been out of favor. Now, with the Amazon Kindle and iPhone Stanza app, ebooks and all digital info products are back stronger than ever. Is it a good time to learn more about this. Definetely!
Question 2: Is there still a market for digital information products out there?
–What’s this fixation with digital info products? Do you mean ebooks? The answer is an obvious yes. It is just too easy for a person seeking information to go find a free downloadable ebook on a particular subject and get immediate gratification. That’s the world we live in. Just go to the internet, put in “ebook” and you will get plenty of choices to narrow your search. We;ll also show the local CPA to write an ebook to explode his business in his local market. We need that knowledge these days. His informative ebook will make him an authority in his market and the go to guy for tax advice and bookkeeping.
Question 3: But there’s lots of digital books and free ebooks out there. Can I make mine stand out amongst the teeming masses?
-Well, that’s just what we will talk about in the EbookNewsroom, the place to get all your news about digital information products…of all kinds really. Major topics will include basic keyword research, keyword placement in stories and promo material, and more. Internet marketers familiar with what I am talking about will recognize some of the tactics I am using in this ‘about’ post. Others will learn as we progress in Ebook Newsroom..
There are ways to produce a book on a particular subject that has high value to readers and could be “the book” of the century. Ebooks are being written on every single subject imaginable, by every person imaginable. If you can write a good “how to book” on a subject that is in demand, market it correctly, the world will surely beat a path to your door with checkbooks ready to buy.
What do you know?
Question 4: Who made you the arbiter of all things digital information product wise?
–Somebody has to do it. I was told once that opinions are like well, you know……and nearly everybody’s got one. That’s a good thing. For many years, I was like the Robert Redford character in Three Days of the Condor. When asked what he did for the CIA he said he “read things”. When asked what he read, Redford’s character replied, “Everything.” That was me for many years. I read everything. Many newspapers every week, every day. Many magazines, periodicals, newsletters, digital information of all types. Newsfeeds, RSS, Google Reader items. I have traveled all over , seen all kinds of people, taught Texas History for 12 years, worked in the oilfields, wrecked cars, rolled pickups, done day work on ranches, swam in the Gulf of Mexico and the Rio Grande, written thousands and thousands of pages of newspaper reporting on all things from city hall to the Capitol, been a politician and hated politicians, drank in lots of honky tonks and been thrown out of a few, and have always respected people for who they were and what they were wherever they are found. I have read about life and lived life. My brain runneth over.
I’m qualified. Plenty of others are qualified too and I hope they will add their comments and wisdom to benefit as many as possible.
Question 5: Tell us a little more about yourself and your typical day.
–Age 59. I was born in San Angelo, Texas on a Christmas Day and grew up in a small west Texas town called Big Lake. There is usually not a lake at Big Lake. It’s generally dry. I’ve both walked across the dry lake bed there and water ski’d on it. Graduated from Texas State University, U.S. Army, jumped out of helicopters, Newspaper editor and publisher for 27 years. Educator, former private pilot, played all high school sports (which I get better at the older I get) Worked in the oilfields, owned some very small interests in oil wells during the first boom. Smoked, chewed, drank. Currently have almost zero vices due to my past life. Fairly laid back, somewhat reserved at first, father of 27 year old Joe David Werst, and married to Ramona since 1-1-2000. Life is good.
A typical day starts in the morning when I get up. For several decades I got up at 5:32 a.m. and got after it. Don’t have to anymore so I don’t. If you had told me I might sit in bed until 9:30 in the morning reading the paper and working on my laptop, I would think you were crazy as hell. Only lazy people do that….the flies will get you. But that’s what happens and I really enjoy it. I do a short workout after rising and shining. About a mile on a treadmill with a view that tricks me into thinking I live in paradise every morning. The view is of a fully flowing Spring Creek with water about as wide as a highway and plenty of trees and a Hill Country look on my side of the creek.
On the other side of the creek from me is dry, hot and dusty West Texas. Mesquite pasture and mesquite covered land. On my side are hundred year old pecan trees that would take two men to stretch their arms around. The limbs on my trees are larger than most folks entire trees. I get to live in West Texas, but not really. Get it? There is about a four square mile part of this area that strongly resembles the Texas Hill country. I get to live in God’s country without the traffic.
I try to get in a short workout in the mornings. After the workout, I also have a hot tub up on the second story screened in deck/porch. Never had a hot tub before, but they take the ache out of old broken bones from a mispent youth. The workout is not anything to brag about, but it’s supposed to be good for you so I do it. It gets me going.
I usually wear shorts in the summer and a t-shirt and an old pair of tennis shoes. Yes I do have boots. Yes, I do have a coat and tie. I try my best to avoid the coat and tie. Drive a Chevy Avalanche. We have chickens, ducks, guineas, peacocks, a bobcat, a cat, and an old dog that’s just about worn out. I go through the yard picking up stuff and doing a few chores until Texas gets too hot or until Ramona calls me up for breakfast. She cooks. I know a lot of wives don’t or don’t have time because they are juggling half the world in a short amount of time, but she cooks. And I am grateful for it. It’s something I have learned. Being grateful, that is.
I was too busy and worked too much to be grateful for all the good things in my former life, but I am grateful now and that makes a world of difference.
After breakfast (yes, fresh eggs from our own chickens) I come downstairs where my office is located. Couldn’t be better as it is private manspace. All I have to do to get a fresh mindset is to walk out the door and there I am in paradise.
Or, just look out my window and watch the chickens work all day long, hunting and scratching, making a place for themselves. They all have names and yes, their own personalities. Kinda like people, huh.
I organize my day, decide where to put my focus, write it all down, and then get to work. Or not. I go through email, get a few ideas and then start writing on whatever suits my fancy.
