Ebook writers

There are a lot of ebooks out there and a lot of ebook writers.  However, ProBlogger Darren Rowse had a few tips if you are just getting started.  He has 13 steps listed in a post he has to get you off high center, and get you started.  We’ll be posting more advice here in the next few weeks so keep checking in.

Here is how Darren starts his posts.  You would also be miles ahead in your journey if you subscribed to Darren’s RSS feed as he often has valuable tips on a variety of subjects.  After all, he’s the Problogger:

You already know all the reasons to do it: you’ve downloaded your share of free ebooks from other blogs, and you’ve seen that:

  • Free ebooks can be used as what Sonia Simone calls “cookie content”, to entice newsletter sign-ups
  • Free ebooks can be a great traffic draw: they get twittered about and linked to
  • Just having a free ebook available on your site will subtly shift readers’ perceptions: they’ll see you as one of the “big guys” of the blogging world

But, of course, an ebook is harder to create than a blog post. A 25-page ebook is 4,000 words or more; you have to edit and proof-read carefully (once people are emailing that ebook to one another, you can’t fix that embarrassing typo or broken link); you’ll need PDF and ebook cover software if you want it to look professional; you have to launch it with a bang…

Writing an ebook isn’t an easy undertaking, and it’s something a lot of bloggers never do. That’s why, if you do write a high-quality free ebook, you’re going to stand out.

—–Darren Rowse

Enjoy and apply the tips.  Again…here are the 13 steps listed.

Become A blogger is closing doors

by david on February 2, 2009

Subject: Doors are closing (open this email ASAP!)

I know you’re busy, so I’ll let you in on what’s
happening…

Two things:

1.  Having your own blog is a great way to market your own Ebooks and for YOU to keep all the profit.  It just makes sense.  When I get one more writing project finished, this blog will rock and roll because I’m going to write THE definitive Ebook on how to write and Market YOUR E-book.  Coming soon right here on Ebook Newsroom

2.  Become a Blogger is closing it’s premium service. If you ever wanted to start a successful blog, learn from these guys.  They taught me and I have 7 blogs up and running because of it.  That’s 7  successful blogs.

Here’s the news……………

I just heard from Gideon Shalwick and Yaro Starak
that they are closing their doors to their popular
Become A Blogger Premium course.

See here for more details:

So far, over 850 people have signed up and the
course has already had some raving reviews. For
example, here’s what Christine, one of the
members, said recently:

“Honestly Gideon your videos are great!

Now that I’m looking at doing business on the
internet and watched a few videos from others who
claim to be gurus; theirs are really awful, too
fast to see what they’re doing and not explaining
things in a logical sequence as if done on the
fly.

Your teaching skills and videos are in a class of
their own. Keep up the good work!”

So, obviously, people are loving the course so
far.

But now, Yaro and Gideon want to close the whole
thing down since it’s becoming a bit too popular.

They said they want to focus their energies on
their members, and frankly, getting too many of
them could spread their attention too thin.

So, I thought I’d better let you know about this
if you still wanted to get in before they shut the
doors indefinitely.

Here’s the scoop:

- What: Become A Blogger Premium is closing doors

- When: Friday, Feb 6, 2009 at 11:59pm USA EST

If you don’t want to miss out on this, make sure
you head on over to the following page before it’s
too late:  Become A Blogger signup

I hope you can still get in!

David

PS: Make sure you have a look at the bonuses -
they are worth more than the whole membership
itself!

Your punishment is waiting

Reading so much is a curse and you know what I mean. I find too many interesting things that get me off tract and distract me from…..writing.  I’m going to get some of those  ‘horse blinders’ and noise canceling headphones and do nothing but write for extended periods.

I’ll finally get something done and quit beating myself up for not being productive.  Seriously, I have wasted whole days and late into the evening reading about the “next big thing.”  It’s kind of like having an illicit love affair with yourself….do you feel guilty afterword?

Sometimes you are ‘in the mood’ and sometimes not, but you always have this self imposed deadline or chain around your neck to write more, be more, and do more in your prime writing time.  if you could just write more, you could live in Trump Tower and be the life of the literary world.  Or at least be a beacon to your children or grandchildren after they come across your old manuscripts.  Sort of like Jane Austen’s rise to fame after she was gone.

There is a way and it’s pretty funny.  Effective, but fairly humorous.  It’s called Write or Die.  You just HAVE to go there and see if it will help you.

As they say, “we report, you decide.”  If you had a choice to either write or die i think I know what you would choose to be more productive.

Your punishment is waiting.

Next up, more on Ebook Readers or digital readers.  I’m telling you, Ebooks are a rising star you should hitch your wagon to once again.

I started with the end in mind

by david on December 17, 2008

Why are we talking about blogs when the name of this site is about Ebooks?

Good question, but there is some logic behind it all.  When I first got started, I probably went about it all backwards.  I tried to thoughtfully visualize where I would end up.  I knew what I could do and what I couldn’t and selling ebooks was something I really did not know much about.  I knew about writing ebooks, and after being a publisher for many years, I figured I could manage the ebook business side of things.  But how exactly do you sell an ebook after you have written it?

Starting with the end in mind, I researched it all to death and came up with blogging as a marketing platform and use it to gain experience to be able to market my ebooks or digital products.  I recommend you do it this way also.  A good start would be to download a Roadmap to your blogging success.  It is the best “big picture” ebook marketing guide I have ever seen.

And after even more research, I came across Wordpress.org.  There is a difference.  Here’s why I chose Wordpress.org as a platform over all the others.

Pro: Wordpress is open source.  It is free and it is a work in progress.  Wordpress is highly customizable.  With Wordpress you have to obtain your own domain name, domain hosting service, and a few other items, but essentially, it all belongs to you.  There are other platforms that are free also.  The domains and hosting are provided for you.  The bottom line on those is they belong to someone else.  Not you. Blogger belongs to Google.  Wordpress.com belongs to Wordpress.com  and so on.  I am just independent enough to want to own my own site lock, stock and proverbial barrel.  That’s it.  That’s the difference.

Con: There is a bigger learning curve using Wordpress for many users rather than getting a site from one of the other guys.  With the others, you have most of it set up for you.  I was sorely tempted to go this route because of my ignorance in setting up the blog, buying a domain, contacting the best hosting provider, finding the right themes and many other factors.  It is definitely easier to go with another pre-designed service that is somewhat customizable.  But it was not for me.  Besides, thinking about the end in mind, what If I wanted to sell my site later to provide for me in my dotage?

Now THAT was another biggie in my book.  So there you have it.  If you can stand the mental challenge of setting up a blog, go with Wordpress.org.

Of course, I learned all about how to do that (and I keep on learning) from Yaro and Gideon at Become A Blogger This is not a sales pitch for them.  They are that good and I would tell you about them anyway because they are who I learned from when first getting started.

Next post let’s start talking specifically about E books.

You’ve heard about the blogging phenomena making  the rounds lately.  And you’ve even thought about setting up your own  blog….maybe to market your own ebooks.

But perhaps the biggest question you’ve had so far is: “What on earth shall I blog about?”

But don’t worry, you’re not alone. And there’s some good news for you as well…

Not many people know what they want to blog about when they’re just getting started.

And that’s why Yaro Starak and Gideon Shalwick have just created a special X-Factor Strategy video
that shows you how…

If you’re in any doubt as to what you should be blogging about (writing your Ebook about), this X-Factor strategy video will get you off to a great start.

The video is an elaboration of one of the X-Factor strategies inside Yaro and Gideon’s report – The
Roadmap To Become A Blogger, which has already been downloaded 8,789 times in the last week!

It looks at a little-known feature of the social media giant Facebook, and shows you how to use it
to your advantage and uncover multiple exploitable niche areas.

You can watch the whole video, without paying a cent or even giving away your details.

Just go ahead and watch the video…

It really won’t cost you a thing, and it even comes with a full transcript that you can print out and
follow along while you watch the video.

It’s a no-brainer – just go and watch it now:

If nothing else, you’ll get to know how to make friends with people from all over the world at the click of a button. And that could be very handy when you’re doing research for your new blog project which might be about a specific Ebook subject.

Start with a ‘learning’ blog

by david on December 3, 2008

No Gravatar

I’ve had as much fun being a blogger as I had being a newspaper editor for a number of years.  Both careers are interesting but they are different as night and day.  In a previous post, I explained how I was worried about blogging because I did not know the ‘techie’ side of the business.  It was hard to get started in the Ebook business if I didn’t know how to blog about it or have a website.  So, procrastination set in, excuses were uttered, and of course, nothing happened.

Let me explain more….

I did not know about themes, FTP, magazine style, Keywords, SEO, links to other posts, backlinks, categories, Wordpress.org or Wordpress.com, Blogger, or anything else.

I knew how to write.  I have a different style than most, I suppose, but I knew about writing and advertising.  I knew basic computer skills.  As I explained earlier, what I did know about had not prepared me to deal with ebooks, ebook publishing, or the ebook business at all.  Except the writing part.  I was pretty sure I could do that.  My reasoning was that ‘anybody’ could write a “how to” ebook.

I came up with a game plan.  I would have a blog to learn from, have fun with,  and after I gained a certain amount of skills, I could graduate on to writing about ebooks and the ebook business in a blog or website.  I had to start somewhere.  At the same time, I could learn about selling ebooks online.

So, i started with a ‘learning’ blog.  You might want to do this also as you learn about ebooks and the ebook publishing business, or you may want to start a blog yourself when you get into all this….I’m hooked.

My learning blog is called RealTexasBlog.com It is based on the geographic area I live in which I call ‘Real Texas‘.   On occasion I would give speeches to various journalism groups around the country.  As I explained to my audience, Real Texas is not Austin or Dallas or Houston.  As soon as i opened my mouth, they knew I was from West Texas.  We just sound a little different out here.  A little more country, a little more Texas.  And to be sure, I laid it on a little thicker.  Also, since I had been a Texas History teacher in public schools for several years, Texas and the part of ‘Texas’ I consider Real Texas, were what I knew about and started blogging about.  It has been a big success and is growing like crazy.  I have subscribers in the hundreds already and readers in the thousands.

The Texas accent may have some negative connotations at the present, but folks out here don’t seem to notice……

I learned (am learning) how to be a blogger from RealTexasBlog.com and I learned a number of tips and techniques.  I read a lot.  I listened to a lot of ‘pitches’ on internet marketing and learned to ignore 99% of it all. And I settled in on two or three mentors I follow and emulate. The e book business was what I wanted to learn and writing about it was what I wanted to do. I did focus on that.

One thing I tried to do was NOT spend any money when first getting started.  Then, when I needed to purchase something, I always looked for value.  One of the best things I did when I was getting started was finding a site to help me get started off right.  Here ’s where I started.  Click on the banner.

Great Videos!  Free. Easy to follow and understand.  Even for me!

Nest post we’ll talk about why I started with Wordpress as a platform instead of all the others out there.

Will I sell more ebooks?

Just Released! New report reveals tested roadmap for blogging success…

Editor’s note:  David here.  It wasn’t anything I did in particular when I first started blogging that got me off to a good start.  Some of it was luck for sure, because I certainly did not know what I was doing.  But maybe some of it wasn’t just “luck.”  Like many of you, I read.  A lot.  At that time, I was reading on how to make a living writing and do it on the internet.  I’ve always been interested in Ebook publishing and the e book business, but did not really know how to get started.  I then decided I needed a blog for many reasons.  The main reason being is that it is easier to sell ebooks online.

That’s where the ‘luck’ part came in.  I read what a young man named Yaro Starak had to say and followed his advice.  I hate it that a very young man had such good advice and I did not.  But i did learn a long time ago to take good advice from wherever it comes.  And then take action.  That’s how I gt started.  Plain and simple.  I trust Yaro and Gideon and their advice and I took action on what they said.

I can recommend this course of study for anyone with confidence.  You won’t hear this skeptical former newspaper editor say that about a lot of stuff out there on the internet. But you can not only follow this advice and thrive, you can also prosper.

Yaro Starak and Gideon Shalwick from become a blogger have finally released their highly anticipated new report. It’s called…

The Roadmap To Become A Blogger

Or simply…”The Roadmap”

If you’re ready to claim your own copy now, just go here (it doesn’t cost a thing):

If you’re new to blogging and still trying to figure out what exactly you’re supposed to be doing with your blog, this may be the most important report you’ll read all year!

The Roadmap report covers two key concepts:

1. The step-by-step “formula” that Yaro Starak used to create his amazingly successful blog and very importantly…

2. Thirteen X-Factor strategies that you can implement immediately to put your blog into superdrive! Inside this amazing new report, you’ll discover…

- How to ethically exploit the biggest wave in technology since the invention of the telephone…

- How Yaro and Gideon stumbled upon the “X-Factor“  For Blogging Success, and how it turned upside down everything they thought tehy knew about  blogging…

- Why not deploying the “X-Factor” in your blog could cause your blog to crash and burn, never to recover…

- 7.4 million reasons why your blog will fail, unless you know how to take advantage of the intersection of two huge Internet trends…

- How a new way of using video, images and a blog turned a penniless actor into an Internet
Superstar!

- 13 secret strategies to attract traffic to your blog like bees to a beehive, turn your competitors green with envy and help you make a huge success of your blogging efforts…

- And much MUCH MORE…

Ready to grab the report? – Here’s the link

Yaro and Gideon really know what they’re talking about when it comes to blogging.

For example, as I’m writing this email, there has already been 63,268 downloads of their complimentary
videos on become a blogger!

That’s enough proof to me that whenever Yaro and Gideon speak, hordes of people stop what they’re
doing, and listen.

Also, it’s no secret that Yaro Starak makes a very comfortable living from his blog…in October of
2008 alone he made more than most people make in a year!

Just imagine…

You can learn from a blogging superstar like Yaro within a few minutes without paying a cent – it really is priceless!

Teaming up with Gideon Shalwick, Yaro’s been able to leverage his knowledge with Gideon’s clear and
easy-to-follow presentation skills, and knowledge of social media and upcoming online trends.

Together, these factors combine for an explosively powerful environment for learning how to blog
successfully.

But really, you should read the report for yourself.  It will open your eyes to opportunities you never thought possible…

Here it is again:  The Roadmap

Talk soon!

David

PS: There is some very time sensitive information inside The Roadmap To Become A Blogger report. If
you wait too long before you get your copy, you may miss out on some very important opportunities.

So, if I were you, I’d download and read my own copy right now before it’s too late…I picked up my advance copy last night and my wife, wouldn’t let me have it until she was finished.  I finished the first ‘read thru’ about 1 a.m.  Get yours and get that blog started.  My goal is that it will help me in selling ebooks that I produce myself.  I’ve got several “How To ebook topics in the mill, but now I have even more strategies on getting those ebooks online.  Good Stuff here!!

Copyright Basics for writers

by david on November 25, 2008

COPYRIGHT BASICS

Here’s a quick quiz. Which of these items could be covered by a copyright: A) one of your photos on a Web-based photo sharing site, B) your friend’s newly self-published play, C) an online video of a drive you took around town? If you answered all three, you’re correct. Copyright infringement has been in the news a lot lately, but it can be tricky to figure out what is and isn’t covered. To clear up some of the confusion, read Copyright Basics from the Library of Congress and the Federal Citizen Information Center. This informative brochure outlines what can and can’t be copyrighted and tells you how to register your own materials with the Copyright Office. For a copy, send your name, address, and a check or money order for $1.00 to the Federal Citizen Information Center, Dept. 314R, Pueblo, CO 81009. Or call toll-free 1 (888) 8 PUEBLO, that’s 1 (888) 878-3256, and ask for Item 314R

Most of the information is available when you click on the link.  You can research what you are interested in and save a buck.  Or, just order it.  And, there is always lots of information….some useful,  from the FCIC in Pueblo.  I used to get their news releases all the time when I was an editor, and sometimes an article sparked an idea.

Always remember, Good ideas come from anywhere.  Get that Ebook idea firmed up and next post we will have in the ebook Newsroom will help you to get started writing it.  In the meantime, try to write a Thanksgiving poem to stir your creative mind.

Start as a beginner

by david on November 19, 2008

No Gravatar

Here is the true story of a rank beginner.   It will be an e Book later on, you can be sure of that, but for readers of the EbookNewsroom.com right now, it tells the story of “How I got Started.”  I did some things good and some not so good.  This is one of those “tell all” ebooks written one post at a time about ebook publishing, and selling ebooks….all from a writer’s point of view.

One of the best things I did was get started.

Some folks just never seem to get started with anything new to them.  I will not get preachy about this, but at some point, you just have to get started.  I’ll try to tell as much about my blogging journey as I can so maybe you can avoid a few pitfalls.  Oh, I was never embarrassed by my blog writing.  I knew I could do that part. I’ve seen too many other bloggers who are millionaires and can not spell c-a-t.

The hesitancy and procrastination issue was something else for me.

I was embarrassed that I should have known the ‘nuts and bolts’ of blogging, computer lingo, html code, pixels,  Wordpress, SEO, and so on…….but I didn’t.  I used a computer daily.  I was in an office full of computers.  I owned all the computers.   But I didn’t REALLY know how to use them other than what I did specifically on them day in and day out.

Looking back on it all, “Why should I have known the ‘techie’ side of blogging and ebooks online and all.  Nothing in my background could have prepared me for any of it.” I was a newspaper man, a writer, a publisher. I knew about other stuff, just not ‘that’ stuff. There, I feel better now.

Most writer’s don’t know all that “stuff” either, and that is what stops many of us from ever getting started writing that first best selling Ebook. You know…The one that keeps on selling month after month and allows us the income to do what we really want….write the phenomenal best seller of all time.  Something else we should aspire to in the meantime is to write the phenom of all ‘how-to ebooks‘.

We know about writing. We know about analyzing, researching, spelling, grammar. But many of us don’t know how to get started.  Two things to mention about all that…It’s not as easy as some might suggest in lots of books and programs folks are trying to sell you and ….it’s not as hard as it looks.

It does take some study and perseverance. That’s all. Mainly perseverance. You CAN find a way over that ‘techie’ hurdle if you just ask for help and can look in the right places. Cursing helps some also. EbookNewroom is designed  will help you get started in the right direction.

So who is EbookNewsroom.com for?   I thought about that some. Here are a few suggestions: Fiction ebook writers, travel ebook writers, romance ebooks, and folks who have specific knowledge about subjects and can write a “How To” ebook. If you can explain it to a tape or digital recorder, you can have it written for you. Just about anybody who wants to publish an ebook themselves can do it trained writers or not.
If you are a writer and can learn to be a marketer, you are so far ahead of the game. You will be a rich person and my “new best friend.”

1.  I’ll tell you what I did right

2.  I’ll laugh and tell you what I did wrong

3.  I’ll tell you about some of the tools I use and some useless things I bought.

4.  I’ll tell you about a huge time waster, distraction, and how to avoid it.

5.  I’ll tell you ‘one way’ I did what I did.  There are many good ways to go about this business model, mine is just one way.  There are lots of talented people out there in internet land and I constantly learn something different. I’m glad I started the way I did and learned from there.  Oh, and I will tell you who specifically I learned from.

Here we go.

One of my first introductions to ebooks was reading a classified ad in a magazine about some character who wrote “how to” ebooks. I was probably in college at the time and THAT was a few yeas ago.   The ad and information stuck with me for a long time. He sold his little catalog of “how to”  ebooks on building doghouses, tool sheds, catching catfish, and lots more.  It also sold something else.  He sold “How To” sell ebooks or booklets as he called them.  He explained how easy it was.  Anybody can do it type stuff.  Remember, this ad was in a magazine, not on the internet.  At that time, there was no internet as we know it.

The ad was a smaller 1×1 display ad about writing “how to ebooks” for fun and profit. The phrase “for fun and profit” has also stuck with me. You mean you can have fun AND make a profit writing how to e books. WOW! I know, some folks will say I’m easily amused, but that’s the way it was.

It was a long time ago, but that ad has stuck with me.  Here he was, probably just some old guy who knew how to build something and he wrote a rudimentary ebook about it.  Except the ebook was mailed out and not delivered digitally.  I’m telling you that guy was not writer, but he was a marketer. He did take action.

If that old guy did it, so can you.

He found something he could do and he built on that.  He found something that worked for him and he kept on, refined it, tested what worked and did it some  more.  That ad was probably in the back of a fishing magazine, hunting magazine, or somewhere men hang out and read stuff. Now he would target his market to women’s magazines, teen magzines, and a number of other unique niches.

Now fast forward a couple of decades.

Even though I had written literally thousands of pages of newspaper articles, thousands of sports stories, thousands of political stories, and the assorted obits of friends and foes, feature stories, human interest, and ‘man bites dog’ stories by the hundreds…..I did not know a thing about blogging, writing e books, and most important, marketing ebooks.

Yes, I am actually an award winning newspaper columnist as chosen by my peers.  I have some very impressive wall plaques for award winning columns, biting editorials, feature writing, and more.  But the true fact is, there are lots more talented writers out there than me who have never won a thing.  They have never been judged by their peers and academic judges as I have.

Why?  They just never got started.

When I decided to start blogging and writing about the ebook business,  I had to start again as a beginner. That scares most people out of ever trying.

The stories I could tell you about “ignorance on fire”….

In fact, there were so many things I did not know it is now amusing to look back on those humble beginnings.  There was one good thing I did, and we’ll get to that in a post on down the line.

So, here I was, an experienced writer of newspaper articles.  One who knew word nuances, how to use words, a semi-proficient copywriter, and I actually have a decent although not overwhelming vocabulary.  I possessed basic computer skills and vividly remember switching over from using a pencil and a yellow legal pad which I handed to a typist to set the copy for me.  I switched from pencil and paper to computer and keyboard without much problem.  I remember being very concerned that I would not be able to transfer my ‘thinking’ skills to a keyboard.  It was a real concern for me.

Those basic computer skills led me to be able to use a basic skill set in formatting a story, mild pagination skills, some Photoshop, and a bit more than your average child of today.  It was a big thing for me.  It can be a big thing for you also.

So, keep reading and I’ll regularly update you on how I got started with EbookNewsroom.com and blogging in general and best of all, ebooks and how to get started on your first best seller.

Here’s one thing I did when I first got started to guide me through the blog set up procedure….so I could also get started writing about ebooks.  I’m not sure you are ready for this yet, but at some point you will be.  The two guys in the picture on the banner are two Aussies who really know what they are doing .  I actually used this information when I first started.  There are 10 great free videos on how to start your blog.  It’s just one tip I will give to get you started in the right direction.

Next post….I’ll explain my unique strategy of having a ‘learning’ blog before I got started with a ‘money’ blog.

Anatomy of an Ebook

by david on November 13, 2008

No Gravatar

I recently read a story in another blog about a common, ordinary, everyday lady (her own description) who wrote an ebook and sold 123 copies the very first day she had it on the market.  She sells it for $39 so you do the math.  Yes, you are correct, $4,797 her first day.  Not bad for a day’s work, huh?

Except is wasn’t just one days work it was 3 months or more.

And, there are several things she would do differently now than when she started.

And, she would not bite off quite so much at one time with her first effort.

And, she had to learn a whole lot before she felt she was even anywhere ready to publish.

And since she was also her own marketing department, she had to learn about that too.

And, she had to learn so many things her hair nearly fell out.  Not really.

And, on and on and on.

You see, it’s not a get rich quick deal in the ebook business.  It’s more of a get rich slow kind of business.  That’s the way it is with writing.  However, with the Model I am using for my own Ebook business, which I will reveal at some point in time….yes, in an Ebook, you actually can benefit financially for years on something you created one time.  I know of writers who have published ebooks that earn them a consistent six figure income with only one or two ebooks in circulation.  Are they on to something?  Are they continuing to produce other books on different subjects.

We are still putting Ebook Newroom.com together, but it will start going full steam ahead with lots of tips, secrets, time management tips and more on the near horizen.  We will be talking more I’m sure. And be sure and stay tuned for more information on an eBook business model that you can earn a living from also.

I’m so glad you are paying attention ’cause it’s gonna really get good in this newsroom.
